Innovative RFS antennas have mobile TV covered

Mobile TV is shaping up to be a central theme at September’s IBC 2008 exhibition in Amsterdam. In keeping with this, Radio Frequency Systems will display a full range of vertically polarized omni-directional mobile TV antennas, specially designed for co-location at mobile base stations. Two new additions to the range will be launched at the exhibition: the remarkably small and lightweight MTV-4 that supports the entire UHF mobile TV band, and the CTV series of compact multi-channel antennas.

Weighing in at only 25kg (50lb), the 140mm (5-1/2-inch) diameter MTV-4 is the smallest antenna of its kind, according to Mick Bennett, RFS Global Product Manager for Broadcast and Defense Systems. “Electrically, physically and in terms of cost-effectiveness, the MTV-4 stands alone in its class,” he said.

Accommodating input powers of up to 1kW with a gain of 6dB, the vertically polarized MTV-4 is fully UHF mobile TV broadband, supporting frequencies from 470 to 806MHz. This combination of power and bandwidth makes it ideal for supporting multi-channel mobile TV operation. Moreover, its small size and low drag profile provide a high wind speed rating and low wind load characteristics.

Complementing the MTV-4 is RFS’s equally compact CTV series of center-fed co-linear antennas, which feature 500W input power-rating and 6dB gain. “The four antennas in the CTV series are suitable for multi-channel operation, and together cover the full range of UHF mobile TV frequencies from 470 to 806MHz,” said Bennett.

“Both the CTV and MTV-4 antennas are ideal for deployment at mobile TV repeater stations, which will likely be co-located with existing infrastructure such as mobile base stations,” he said. A central requirement for this is sufficient signal strength to provide good reception, balanced against power limits to avoid blocking co-sited cellular receivers. Just as important are antennas that are visually unobtrusive and ultra-lightweight to meet environmental and structural considerations.

Sharing these characteristics, and also on show at IBC 2008, are RFS’s 3.5kg (7.7lb) ultra-slim HU6 antenna and the high-performance SDV-4 antenna. “The HU6 is an excellent choice for single-channel networks,” said Bennett. “It offers an 8MHz channel and accommodates input powers of up to 300W. The SDV-4, on the other hand, is a multi-channel antenna, covering the entire UHF frequency range. It offers premium VSWR performance and accepts up to 1kW input power.”

RFS’s lightweight mobile TV antenna suite is complemented by the company’s leading range of broadband panel array antennas, ideal for delivering uniform or tailored coverage across a wide area. The high-power arrays, available in all polarization configurations, support a large number of services in a multi-channel environment.

According to Bennett, RFS has overcome one of the technical challenges traditionally associated with vertically polarized antennas of this type—specifically the achievement of advanced horizontal radiation pattern (HRP) performance. “This innovation provides consistent HRP results across all UHF frequencies and is particularly advantageous for data-intensive mobile TV broadcasts,” he said.

The IBC exhibition will also see RFS unveil plans for the next addition to its mobile TV antenna suite. “A higher gain/high-power, 2kW version of the SDV antenna will be available in the fourth quarter of 2008,” said Bennett. “Its increased power output will provide extra reach for broadcasters who need to service a larger area from particular mobile base station sites.”
