U-Link breaks through frequency barrier

Radio Frequency Systems has pioneered two new 6-1/8-inch coaxial RF transfer switches (U-Links) that operate at frequencies up to 860MHz (75-ohm model) and 820MHz (50-ohm model) respectively. To be unveiled to IBC audiences in September, the two new RFS Rapid Release U-Links support manual RF switching of high-power (and/or high-voltage) digital and analog television channels in the upper UHF band (Band V).

According to Mick Bennett, RFS Global Product Manager for Broadcast and Defense Systems, the U-Links were developed to overcome the tendency of large rigid-line components to develop waveguide characteristics at higher frequencies. “The internal dimensions start to become significant at higher frequencies in the larger rigid-line sizes,” he said. “Standard 50-ohm 6-1/8-inch U-Links produce waveguide modes at frequencies greater than about 750MHz. The broadcast industry has been working around this for years.”

In a world first, RFS’s new 50-ohm 6-1/8-inch U-Link supports frequencies up to 820MHz--the only broadband 50-ohm 6-1/8-inch U-Link to operate beyond 750MHz without producing waveguide modes. It exhibits standard power handling capabilities, better than standard peak voltages of up to 19kV, and better than standard return loss of less than -40dB. “The extended frequency range of the 50-ohm U-Link allows broadcasters to standardize on 50-ohm components for channels up to 820MHz,” Bennett said. “The 75-ohm RFS switch-frame and U-Link will be used for high-power systems supporting channels up to 860MHz.”

RFS’s new 75-ohm switch-frame and U-Link has already been deployed at a major site in the UK as part of the country’s digital switchover.
