RFS Wins Contract for Unprecedented Advancement in Broadcast Technology


Meriden, CT (United States), September 3, 2015 – Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), a global wireless and broadcast infrastructure specialist, has been awarded a landmark contract with a major, national broadcaster that improves on the network’s ability to adapt and grow. The new project replaces existing antennas with a single antenna that can accommodate multiple channels, using RFS’ new Variable Polarization Technology (VPT) to handle different frequencies and polarization ratios for two prominent broadcast channels in the Dallas market.

The broadcasting company’s full VPT UHF system order with RFS is based around three advanced products that were all developed specifically for the US market: 6PPXX325E 50kW tunable filters, PEP L-Lite™ antennas and 80 kW high power broadband couplers. The three products involved in this contract incorporate cutting-edge technology. The PEPL-56D antenna will accommodate two channels, using Variable Polarization Technology. The antenna’s 14-level by four-around array offers both full band performance and flexible polarization ratio. RFS has patented the VPT that allows broadcasters to individually set their respective polarization ratios, independent of one another. It will also allow for polarization ratio changes in the future without replacing or even climbing the antenna, as upgrades and changes can be made from inside the transmitter room. The broadband performance of this antenna from RFS will provide an ideal solution for broadcasting groups that own two or more stations in one market and will allow for future changes in frequency due to the impending reverse auction without changes to the antenna.

In the case of Dallas, two broadcast channels will operate in a common antenna but with their own polarization ratio. This ratio will be changed (independent of one another) when the individual stations invest in incremental transmitter power to support elliptical polarization. RFS’ revolutionary VPT broadcasting solution also leverages additional technology advancements, including the company’s CA6PPXX325E-M 80kW Tunable UHF Mask Filter, CA6PPXX325E Tunable UHF Combiner, VPT71E61-R UHF Variable Phase Splitter (which allows for changing the polarization ratio inside the transmitter building with no change to the antenna), and  PP71E5-RM Five Port Antenna U-Link System or Switch Frame.
This new technology will help lead the broadcast industry forward to meet the changing needs of audiences, markets and channels of operation. The RFS solution provides broadcasting companies with added flexibility for future-proofing their infrastructure.
The new RFS antenna system will ship to Dallas in December, 2015 for early 2016 installation.
