RFS to showcase state-of-the-art products and technologies for mobile broadcasting at the 2011 NAB Show

Las Vegas, April 5, 2011 – At the 2011 NAB Show to be held April 11-14 in Las Vegas, Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), the global wireless and broadcast infrastructure specialist, will feature innovative products and technologies, such as variable polarization, that empower broadcasters — in particular North American broadcasters — to tackle frequency rebanding challenges and evolve to mobile broadcasting.

With the conversion to digital broadcasting virtually complete in North America, broadcasters can now use their VHF and UHF spectrum to deliver mobile media services to portable devices and in-car systems. Broadcasters must also consider potential changes from the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) desire to regain spectrum and repack broadcasters into more confined spectrum. To meet these challenges, system designs need to be dynamic and able to operate exceptionally at any frequency in a given band.

“Now more than ever, broadcasters need to team up with an experienced infrastructure partner that can anticipate where technology is going and offer solutions that adapt to their needs,” explains Martyn Kemel, President, Broadcast and Defense at RFS. “RFS is excited to be involved in this changing industry. At the 2011 NAB Show, we will reaffirm our commitment to meeting the long-term needs of the broadcast market and to delivering the technology expertise, experience and solutions needed for the evolution of broadcasting in the new mobile world.”

Richland Towers Senior Vice President David Denton said: “RFS has developed many technical solutions that meet our needs and those of the clients we serve. RFS can bring the North American market solutions that expand broadcasters’ capabilities and are ready for the future, allowing changes in channels and polarization ratios. This approach positions RFS as a key partner for future projects.”

To help alleviate broadcasters’ challenges, RFS offers products that provide variable polarization technology. Variable polarization is critical for mobile broadcasting, particularly to mobile receive devices. It is central to RFS’ broadcast offerings.

RFS’ broadcast portfolio also supports new mobile standards, such as Advanced Vestigial Sideband (A-VSB) modulation and Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting–T (ISDB-T). These capabilities allow broadcasters to more easily adapt to the changing industry without fear of product obsolescence.

To highlight its technology advantages in the area of mobile broadcasting, RFS will feature at the 2011 NAB Show:

- PCP and PEP panel antenna arrays designed for digital TV (DTV), mobile TV, analog TV and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) applications. These UHF antennas allow the same array to be simultaneously used for horizontal, elliptical and/or circular polarization. This gives broadcasters the flexibility to share the same antenna but individually choose the polarization ratio that best meets their requirements and transmitter limitations. These antennas support frequencies ranging from 470 MHz to 700 MHz to minimize broadcaster concerns about possible frequency changes resulting from FCC rebanding of the television spectrum.

- PHP12S panel antenna arrays designed to wrap around large structures while providing superior circularity. This horizontally polarized array has an optimized beamwidth to allow wrapping of large square or rectangular tower sections with 12 elements and to deliver omni-directional performance previously delivered only by top-mounted pylon arrays. Broadcasters also benefit from the array’s full-band operation (470 MHz to 750 MHz), which minimizes concerns about possible frequency changes resulting from FCC rebanding of the television spectrum.

- Emmy® Award-winning filter technology that complements the antenna portfolio as part of an end-to-end broadcast infrastructure solution. RFS’ patented technology, used in the CW-series directional filters, allows for high-power adjacent channel combining. It has saved the television industry millions of dollars by making it possible to concurrently operate digital and analog systems without deploying new antennas and towers. Featured products also include the PeakPower+ series of filters. The PeakPower+ filters feature power ratings from 50 Watts to 10kW, all of which are tunable across the UHF band and for 6, 7 or 8 MHz channels.

As a global player in the wireless and broadcast industries, RFS brings broadcasters unrivalled depth of experience. The company has been a trusted partner in numerous mobile network, distributed transmission system (DTS) and single frequency network deployments as well as HF, VHF, UHF and L-band deployments around the globe. RFS’ experience with vertically-polarized antenna deployments in other parts of the world will also help North American broadcasters as they take advantage of FCC rulings that allow vertical-only polarization in the 700 MHz band.

RFS specialists on hand at the 2011 NAB Show will include Jay Martin (Director Broadcast Sales and Business Development, North America), Martyn Kemel (President, Broadcast and Defense Systems), Mick Bennett (Global Product Manager, Broadcast and Defense Systems), Nick Wymant (CTO, Broadcast and Defense Systems) and Tom Nowik (Broadcast Sales Engineer).
