RFS supplies FM combiners for Irish upgrade

In support of a national upgrade of FM radio transmission infrastructure, Irish broadcast transmission company, RTÉ Transmission Network Limited (RTÉNL), appointed Radio Frequency Systems to supply FM channel combining and RF switch-frame technology for six main transmission sites.

The project is part of a national FM equipment re-engineering project by RTÉNL. Phase one of the upgrade--comprising the sites of Clermont Carn, Kippure and Mount Lenster--was completed in August 2006. The balance of the sites will be commissioned by the end of this year (2007).

According to Dave Thickett, RFS European Sales Director for Broadcast and Defense Systems, RFS has supplied two five-channel FM combiner systems for the phase-one sites, and will supply similar systems for the three remaining sites. The systems are founded on RFS’s CA-series FM balanced combiner modules. These can be tuned to any frequency in VHF Band II (87.5 to 108MHz), and offer a compact size for the given power rating--in this case 25kW per narrowband input.

“Although the systems supplied to RTÉNL are based on standard combiner modules, they have been modified to integrate transmitter input switching units to save space,” Thickett said. These allow the transmitter signal to be switched between the combiner and a test load. In addition, RFS has supplied or upgraded separate RF output switch frames for all six sites. The output switch frames incorporate RFS’s MS Series RF monitor, a microprocessor-based system with touchscreen that is ideal for monitoring forward/reflected transmitter power and displaying switch configurations.

The upgrade project is being carried out in conjunction with RFS’s installation partner, In House Technologies, and transmitter manufacturer, Ecreso. “So far, the installation at Clermont Carn has been the biggest challenge,” Thickett said. “The new combiner system had to be installed in exactly the same location as the old one--without any services going off-air! So we had to build a temporary combiner that operated from the middle of the transmitter room while the changeover was carried out.”

The new RFS FM combiner systems and RF switch frames replace legacy equipment that had reached the end of its serviceable life. They are connected to existing FM antenna systems, and support the broadcast of multiple radio services, including RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ lyric fm, Today fm and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.
