RFS’ HYBRIFLEX™ hybrid feeder cabling solution continues to impress in successful field trial with Telefónica in Spain

Colombes (France) July 5, 2011 – Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), the global wireless and broadcast infrastructure specialist, today announced that Spanish operator Telefónica has successfully trialed its HYBRIFLEX hybrid feeder cabling solution in a live network. HYBRIFLEX combines optical fiber and DC power for Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) in a single corrugated cable. The success of the HYBRIFLEX trial in Spain follows successful trials in other European countries as well as in Australia, Latin America and the United States.

During the trial, completed in March 2011, HYBRIFLEX was installed at a Telefónica cell site in Madrid, Spain. The trial site was the roof of a residential building where three RRHs were being deployed to improve UMTS capacity in a crowded city area. RFS delivered a three-sector HYBRIFLEX cable combining three DC power pairs and three single-mode fiber optic pairs. The cable's ease of installation, robust design and weather resistance impressed Telefónica and the Telyman installers.

"Our patent-pending HYBRIFLEX cable combines a very compact and durable design with the flexibility of a conventional solution," says Antonio Sanchez, Regional Sales Manager for Iberia at RFS. "Telyman installers felt, and said, that HYBRIFLEX was a good solution and robust."

Because it is a single, compact cable, HYBRIFLEX requires considerably less space than existing and competing cables. This is crucial at urban sites — particularly rooftops — where space constraints typically present major challenges. The Madrid rooftop site was already crowded with cables. Installing HYBRIFLEX next to existing fiber optic and DC power cables in this crowded environment highlighted its comparatively small space requirements. HYBRIFLEX also requires fewer installation materials and steps. This accelerates deployments to save both time and money.

To simplify installations, HYBRIFLEX uses standard accessories and the same installation methods as other RFS radio frequency (RF) cables. No specialized accessories or knowledge are required. The cable length can be easily adapted to meet site constraints, such as differing distances to RRHs. Length can be adjusted using standard procedures for fiber optic and DC power cables.

In Madrid, two RRHs required one-meter distribution cables from the main HYBRIFLEX cable while the third RRH required 15 meters of distribution cable. RFS' HYBRISEAL allowed installers to fully seal the point where the multi-sector HYBRIFLEX cable was split into its individual fiber optic and DC power cables.

HYBRIFLEX is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions such as high winds and lightning. Aluminum or copper armor provides robust protection of the fiber optic and DC cables. The aluminum armor and use of standard grounding kits also provide integrated lightning protection. The level of protection against lightning strikes is similar to that of RF feeder cables, which is much better than that of conventional DC cables. By reducing the number of hanging cables, HYBRIFLEX helps operators reduce the risk of damage due to high winds.

"We are very pleased with the customer's reaction to our HYBRIFLEX cable," concludes Antonio Sanchez. "Achieving success in this important trial with Telefónica — the first for HYBRIFLEX in Spain — is one more proof point that HYBRIFLEX helps operators address their challenges."

RFS unveiled HYBRIFLEX in April 2010.
