RFS Enables Train Control System and Public Communication Network in Turkey’s Marmaray Rail Tunnel

Safe, efficient and effective train control and reliable public safety and public communications are now possible along the tracks of the world’s deepest train tunnel in Turkey because of a wireless communications network enabled by Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), the global wireless and broadcast infrastructure specialist.

Inaugurated in Istanbul in October, the 12.2 km rail tunnel between the Asian and European shores of the Bosporus Strait includes a 1.4 km immersed tube tunnel — the world’s deepest at 60 m beneath the strait. To maintain effective control over trains travelling through the tunnel, support public safety and emergency communications for police, fire and ambulance agencies, and provide passengers with uninterrupted access to mobile communications services, the Istanbul government’s General Directorate of Infrastructure Investments and the State Railways of the Turkish Republic (TCDD) built the in-tunnel communications network with RFS RADIAFLEX® cables.

The RFS RADIAFLEX suite of radiating cables is designed to provide broadband wireless coverage for confined areas. Each cable features RFS’ patented higher order mode suppression technique in radiating cable design. This unique design allows RFS to offer cables that support current and future indoor commercial and private radio services from 30 MHz to 2700 MHz — including LTE — for valuable cost savings. The broadband feature enables cables to work on different bands in one single coverage system, thereby supporting multiple carriers and multiple standards. Radio signals leaked from the apertures on the radiating cable’s outer conductor provide reliable wireless coverage for confined areas, like tunnels, mines, and large building complexes.

For the Marmaray tunnel installation, RFS RADIAFLEX cables were installed to support two independent networks. One network is designed to enable the Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system operating in the 2.4 GHz band. The other network is designed to support the public safety and emergency Telecom system operating in the VHF (168 MHz) and UHF (380-470 MHz) frequencies, as well as GSM-R, GSM 900, UMTS 2100 and Tetra Public Emergency communications in the 415 MHz and 2.4 GHz frequencies. Both networks were available for the official inauguration of the train tunnel on October 29, 2013.
