Radio Frequency Systems Speaking at 2015 IEEE Broadcast Symposium

Meriden, CT (United States), 13 October 2015 – Benedikt Scheid, Senior RF Design Engineer at Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), a global wireless and broadcast infrastructure specialist, will speak at the 2015 IEEE Broadband Symposium on Friday, October 16 at 8:30 AM.

RFS’ presentation during the Symposium’s Repack Session will focus on the key role that fully tunable and broadband high-power passive components will play in the US National Broadband Plan starting in 2016. Infrastructure for at least1,000 broadcast sites may be modified as changing channels require replacement of traditional single-frequency components. Fully tunable or broadband components will provide much needed flexibility for installers and operators to tackle the vast amount of channel changes and fully plan their frequency switch well ahead of time.

A major passive component, which will have to be re-tuned during the switch-over, is the transmitter spectrum limiting device – the filter. Low-power filters (<10kW) have been fully tunable for many years. Only recently, full tunability also has been achieved for high-power broadcast filters - up to 50kW in a reflective filter and 100kW in a constant impedance filter.

Key elements for achieving such high-power tunable filters will be presented in the Technical Session, including thermal management, using electromagnetic and thermal co-simulation as well as suitable testing methods to validate simulations in both thermal and electrical domains.
