Malaysia launches DTV with RFS

A recent upgrade of two key broadcast sites in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur marks the beginning of the country’s digital television (DTV) deployment. The combined terrestrial broadcast systems, provided by broadcast solutions group, Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), are key components of a complete digital video broadcasting - terrestrial (DVB-T) two-channel DTV solution. The upgrade allows leading broadcaster, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), to deliver the country’s first DTV services to audiences in Kuala Lumpur and its surrounds.

Online since early-2007, Malaysia’s new DTV broadcast network incorporates two key transmission sites--KL Tower and Ulu Kali. Located in central Kuala Lumpur, KL Tower provides far-reaching omni-directional coverage to the Klang Valley region. Rising 1700 meters (5575 feet) above sea level in the eastern Titiwangsa Mountains, the Ulu Kali site provides directional coverage to the north, south and west.

In conjunction with leading broadcast communications specialist, Broadcast Technology Limited (BTL), RFS designed, supplied and commissioned a combined broadband antenna systems at the Ulu Kali site, and a fully engineered combiner system at the KL Tower site. This significant broadcast project was overseen by leading Malaysian investment holding company, KUB Malaysia.

According to RFS Global Product Manager, Broadcast & Defence Systems, Mick Bennett,

Malaysia’s new DTV broadcast systems employ a range of the latest RFS technologies. “The Ulu Kali site features two six-level, four-sided horizontally polarized panel arrays and a switch-frame,” he said. “At the KL Tower site, RFS integrated a new multi-channel balanced combiner and patch-panel with existing analogue infrastructure and broadband antenna.”

Due to the Klang Valley’s unique geographical constraints, a sophisticated broadcast system, boasting a balanced combination of precise pattern-tailoring, transmission quality and power was essential. “RFS carried out detailed coverage predictions to establish the required pattern tailoring,” said Bennett. “It was desirable to minimize the coverage over the mountains to the east and maximize the coverage to the north, south and west. RFS achieved this level of pattern sculpting without compromising performance.”

Installation of the broadcast systems, particularly at the Ulu Kali site, proved an interesting challenge due to the unpredictable weather. “RFS was able to provide a fully factory assembled antenna array to site,” said BTL Technology Sales Manager, Kitson Choi. ”Once unpacked, it was simply a case of installing the antenna and making the main feeder connection. This dramatically minimized site installation time.”

The entire antenna system was range tested at RFS’s manufacturing facility in Australia, allowing KUB and RTM representatives the opportunity to witness the performance of the broadcast system under real conditions. “Observing the broadcast system in operation prior to delivery was extremely beneficial for RTM and KUB--a luxury not usually offered by other RF solution providers,” said Choi.

The DTV broadcast solutions provided at both sites have been future-proofed to allow expansion of Malaysia’s DTV service. “The RFS broadcast systems can accommodate a six-fold increase in total channel-count,” said Bennett. “Furthermore, the RFS systems can permit digital video broadcasting - terrestrial (DVB-T), making them Mobile TV-ready.”
