IBC07: RFS talks digital networks from all angles

Industry-wide mobile media convergence will be a major highlight of September’s IBC--in reflection of this, Radio Frequency Systems will demonstrate its unique total perspective on the wireless world. The company will be exhibiting key elements of its expansive digital broadcasting solution set, plus will field experts in other aspects of wireless infrastructure--such as in-building and tunnel RF coverage systems.

“Broadcasting to mobile handhelds is the next step in RF technology,” said Dave Thickett, RFS European Sales Director for Broadcast and Defense Systems. “Telcos that have deployed 3G television services are already experiencing capacity limitations, and they acknowledge the need to incorporate broadcast solutions to propel mobile TV into the next phase. Plus there are many emerging wireless data technologies. The challenge is going to be integrating all the different platforms, so that consumers can experience everything on the one handset.”

The core common factor all mobile technologies share is the use of RF transmission systems to deliver the signal. RFS leads the way in this field, as the wireless infrastructure technology group with the broadest range of solutions for RF delivery. “Not only do we have the most extensive range of broadcast antenna systems in the world, but we also provide state-of-the-art wireless indoor solutions for in-building and tunnel coverage and mobile base station antenna systems,” Thickett said. “RFS has a total perspective of the mobile media industry and is the ideal technology partner for convergence.”

Central to RFS’s exhibit at IBC will be a series of lightweight and low profile antennas ideal for deploying at mobile base stations to support mobile media/cellular overlays. Foremost among these will be a new high-power version of the popular vertically polarized (VP) UD broadband antenna. Supporting the entire UHF band in just three models and offering four distinct dipole arrays (4-, 8-, 12- and 16-bay), the high-power UD antenna features input power ratings of between 4 to 10kW and nominal gains of between 8 to 14dBd, making it ideal for larger cell coverage.

Also to be unveiled is the RFS VP omnidirectional SDV4 antenna, which supports UHF broadband operation between 470 and 750MHz. Weighing just 45kg (99lb), the SDV4 is one of the lightest antennas in the RFS portfolio, and offers an extremely cost-effective and low-power solution for deploying mobile media overlays at multiple base stations.

In support of gathering momentum for DTV deployment and analog switch-off, RFS will also exhibit key elements of its leading suite of broadband antenna system solutions. This will include the company’s latest developments in broadband panel arrays, plus two new 6-1/8-inch ‘Rapid Release U-Links’ for manual switching applications. In a world first, RFS has engineered a 50-ohm U-Link that supports frequencies up to 820MHz--the only broadband 50-ohm 6-1/8-inch U-Link to operate beyond 750MHz without producing waveguide modes. The new 75-ohm model is optimized for the full UHF band (470-860MHz).

Visit the RFS stand at IBC 2007 to discuss the company’s full range of RF solutions for all aspects of digital and mobile broadcasting: Hall 8 Stand 418, RAI Amsterdam, 7 to 11 September, 2007.
